As a Reference Librarian at the Fairfax County Public Library in Arlington, Virginia, Carey Hagan holds responsibility for a wide range of tasks related to assisting library patrons and maintaining the library's collection. The vast majority of Carey Hagan's duties involve helping visitors at the front desk, providing book recommendations and informational services. Renowned for her specialized knowledge of literature written expressly for children and adolescents, Carey Hagan has also participated in the development of library programs designed to appeal to children and those created to assist students in the library's literacy outreach programs.

Prior to joining the staff at Fairfax Public Library, Carey Hagan served as a Cataloger at Mullen Library at The Catholic University of America, where she was chiefly responsible for cataloging new materials, database maintenance, and research. Carey Hagan began her career in library sciences as an Intern at the Library of Congress. In this capacity, Carey Hagan participated in the redesign of an existing Library of Congress instructional course, updated the organization's research courses, and instructed students on finding information in the library's large collection.

Carey Hagan is a graduate of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and Russian Language and Literature. She also received a Master of Arts in English Literature and later graduated from The Catholic University of America, where she earned a Master of Science in Library and Information Service.
